Afternoon of Fauns: Ravel 150
The Chamber Music series is a fascinating selection of music made by our musicians. Small ensembles and the hall’s intimate atmosphere highlight the unique sound of each instrument.
Franz Schubert (arr. W. Matiegka): Quartet D96
Maija Juuti, cello, Anne Korhonen, viola, István Szalay, violin, and Janne Malinen, guitar
Maurice Ravel: String Quartet in F Major
Katri Nikkanen, I violin, Lotta Laaksonen, II violin, Kimmo Kivivuori, viola, and Sampo Liukko, cello
The works in this concert are separated by a century during which history experienced the emotional storms of an entire stylistic era. Wenzel Thomas Matiegka's Notturno was so popular that early Romantic master Franz Schubert adapted it into a quartet for his family gatherings. Ravel's String Quartet in F Major, one of his first significant works, blends restrained emotion with technical brilliance, signaling the dawn of a new era. The concert is hosted by composer Minna Leinonen.
